Net Neutrality is at risk once again – and this time it’s not just the telecos that are after our digital freedom.

Free Basics

Remember internet.org by Facebook? Well, it’s been renamed to “Free Basics” and is literally being shoved down the users’ throats with advertisements on various apps and notifications on FB.

What’s more, the cleverly worded campaign makes anyone who doesn’t sign up feel like they’re anti-national while their “friends who have already signed” are the ultimate patriots.

Every time someone “accepts” the Free Basics, Facebook diligently sends an email to TRAI on their behalf supporting the cause.

Thankfully, TRAI is also open to suggestions from the general public and is accepting emails towards the same. The deadline for action is 30th December, but our friends at savetheinternet.in have made the process a matter of 2 simple clicks (which can also be done via mobile).

Here’s what to do :

  1. Click on this link – www.savetheinternet.in
  2. Click on “Respond to TRAI now” (it’s the big blue button on the front – you can’t miss it).
  3. Send the email.

You can also :

  1. Email your MP
  2. Edit your answers before you email them.

I realise you’re all in a festive mood, but this will hardly take 2 minutes of your time and will ensure that the internet we enjoy remains free from political/corporate cynicism.
